In this video Dr. Michio Kaku, talks about H1B as the “America’s Secret Weapon” , because that attracts people all over the country to work in the USA. He also mentions that if those immigrants especially from India and China leaves their country, their whole infrastructure will collapse.
This is so true as most of the big companies are run and organized by people from other countries. One of their best engineers are not Americans but Asians. But still USA is not doing to retain these people. The have so rigid and senseless visa system, that lots of talented people are required to go. H1B doesn’t give you access to work in USA forever as it can be renewed only twice and after that you either need to have green card or should be a citizen.
Most of the companies are reluctant to file green card as its a liability for both employee and employer to work together for long period of time. For employees because they desperately want to get their green card, and for employer because they have invested in them. Green cards for people from India and China take about 7-8 years to get approved which is hell long period of time.
In case a person is not able to find any company to sponsor their green card, they eventually have to leave US. US govt. doesn’t understand that most of the people that leave their country because of visa issues are skilled people, with either degrees from US universities or working for bigger companies at some critical projects that eventually will help US.
Lots of the people who go back to their countries tend to start their own venture and many even get successful and compete against the same company they were working in US.
They even have disgusting rules with H1B visa as well. The spouse of a person with H1B visa is not allowed to work in the USA, however spouse of L1 visa (which is Intra-Company Transfer Visa for USA) is allowed to work. A person with L1 visa is not committed to this country, however a person with H1B visa is committed to this country and working for US company, but there are such rules.
In order to save USA with this financial crises, they should really work on giving more liberty to H1B people and shorten the time period to get green cards.
